MR. MONK ON THE COUCH
Now Available! atalie Teeger has picked up a few detective skills of her own during her years as Adrian Monk's loyal assistantand she's eager to put them to use. But that's not easy when you work with a deductive genius who can solve a murder in no time.
But Natalie gets her chance when a man with no identity is found dead of natural causes, and neither Monk nor the police see any reason to get involved in the case. It also helps that Monk becomes distracted by a crime-scene cleaning crew's ability to clean up the worst messes imaginable. He gets plenty of opportunities to see them at work as he investigates several particularly brutal murders that seem to be tied to a worthless secondhand couch. With a little help from Monk's agoraphobic brother, Natalie tackles her own investigation while also helping Monk track the couch by following a bloody trail that could lead them to the most ruthless killer they've ever encountered. "Based on past experience with the novels in this series, I knew it would be funny, well written, and well researched. I knew it would have a clever plot and interesting characters. And I hoped I'd find some interesting developments in Natalie Teeger's life. I wasn't disappointed. It had all this and more. As a bonus, there's also a quite interesting change in the life of Monk's brother, Ambrose, one that added a good many laughs to the book. The plot? It appears that a serial killer is on the loose in San Francisco, and as the victims pile up, it turns out that they're all in Natalie's neighborhood. There's a mcguffin, too, giving the title a double meaning. While that's going on, Natalie's making an investigation of her own, into the life of a man who's died of natural causes in a seedy hotel. Who was he? Why was he there? Natalie wants to know. That's enough said. If you like the other Monk books, you'll like this one. If you've never read the other Monk books, what are you waiting for? This is one of the most entertaining series around. Highly recommended."
"For the first time in twelve original novels inspired by the hit TV series, Natalie Teeger steps from Adrian Monk's formidable shadow. She's usually consigned to handing her boss anti-bacterial wipes, smoothing his awkward interactions with others, and playing second-fiddle to his savant-like brilliance in the detective world. But Teeger's been paying dues of her own and in Mr. Monk On The Couch she finally has an opportunity to withdraw a little personal capital she's built up as his sidekick. In fact for this novel, she's first violin, the cello and the entire string section. In this book, Natalie moves, ever so gently from behind Mr. Monk to find her own self in the world of murder investigations. She does so despite Monk, who usually spins disorder in his quest for order. Life is messy. Monk cleans it up. Or so he believes. He actually creates more messes than he cleans up. It's really Natalie who does the cleaning and she sees her opportunity to do her own mop-up, hopefully without offending the un-affable Mr. Monk."
"Lee Goldberg's 12th Monk novel is a little different from preceding installments in the series. Monk's assistant Natalie Teeger, who doubles as the book's narrator, has become interested in playing the detective herself. When a man is found dead in a seedy hotel room of natural causes, but nevertheless in mysterious circumstances, she sets herself the task of figuring out his back story. The job is unnecessary as far as the police are concerned, and Monk is bored by it, but Natalie doggedly pursues the mystery with help from Monk's agoraphobic brother Ambrose. Natalie's development into a detective in her own right is a nice development, and there's a welcome change in Ambrose's circumstances as well. There's also a decent mystery—a foursome of related deaths—to keep Monk occupied. The problem is that with Natalie's role in the story expanded, Monk's is correspondingly reduced. As a result, the book, while still well worth reading, is much less amusing than previous installments. So I'm hoping for a return to the more familiar pattern in book thirteen."
"This quirky OCD detective is just as wonderful on the page as in the show, and with Lee Goldberg having written for the show as well, he has the characters and feel down perfectly...Monk books are always wonderful fun and this one is no exception. There just isn't anyone else like Monk and I'm happy to see his story continue even though the show is gone. And no one else could capture these characters and bring them to life on the page the way Lee Goldberg does!"
"Adrian Monk is a great character full of life, flaws and so brilliant he is a perfect man to portray in a book. A fictional character could not be better as a detective. He comes across the pages and leaves readers shaking their heads in disbelief. Natalie is a great secondary lead who does her best to balance Monk's OCD behaviors, and is brilliant in her own right. The secondary characters round this novel out to be one of the best reads I have read this year. Lee Goldberg is a talented author who takes characters from an obsolete television show and brings them back to life. He brings them from the pages and makes them feel as though they are real people working cases and making waves in the community. MR. MONK ON THE COUCH is a fast pace read worthy of any mystery lovers time."
If Mr. Monk On The Couch had been a script for the long running Monk TV series, it might have been what they call a backdoor pilot script. For a spin-off. In this case, for Natalie Teeger, P.I... Natalie shows spunk and initiative throughout the book in getting to the mystery behind the man's life...The question posed in the book is, what would happen to Natalie if something happened to Monk? She might go back to her rich family. But not now. We know the answer." |
